Types of saris

While an international image of the 'modern style' sari may have been popularised by airline stewardesses, each region in the Indian subcontinent has developed, over the centuries, its own unique sari style. Following are the well anchipuramnown varieties, distinct on the basis of fabric, weaving style, or motif.

Georgette Saree

Georgette saree is a traditional wear with class. Exclusive georgette saree is essentially a party wear or a festive wear. These sarees are available in all colors. The look of geogette saris can be multiplied by zardosi or embroidery work. Geogette sari collection is like a treasure. The soft and shimmering georgette sari is widely used as the dress for women. The stitches and the intricate workmanship used in pure georgette is par excellence. The graceful drape of georgette gets perfectly blended with traditional Indian designs and patterns.

Georgette is a sheer lightweight fabric, often made of silk or polyester. It is slightly heavier and more opaque than chiffon. The twisted crepe fibers from which georgette is made gives it a springy quality that makes it seem to move on its own. While this quality makes georgette somewhat more difficult to sew the results are well worth the effort.

(Kancheepuram Sarees are also known as Kanchipuram and Kancheevaram and sometimes Kanchivaram Sarees!)

History has it that Kancheepuram rose to eminence during Krishna-Deva Raya's reign, when two weaving communities - the Devangas and the Saligars transmigrated to Kancheepuram from Andhra Pradesh. Primarily because within this seemingly minuscule town there were more than 129 finely crafted temples. And silk was always considered the ceremonial wear at religious rituals and weddings. The Devanga and Saligar weavers were reputed for their weaving silks. Every Kancheepuram silk Saree is amongst the most superior silks in the world. Thanks to its double warp and double weft. Besides which, the gold in the motifs is incorporated by dipping the silk thread into liquid gold and silver. This enhances the beauty and the value of the silk.
